What is a Learning Management System (LMS)?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software or web-based application used to plan, administer, track and report learning processes. With a powerful LMS, organizations can efficiently manage learning content, resources and learners, deliver the learning content to students and then track progress and performance across multiple types of learning activities.

Learning activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Instructor-Led Training (ILT)
  • eLearning or online training
  • On-the-Job-Training (OJT)
  • Discussion forums
  • Video conferencing & virtual classrooms

In addition to utilizing a LMS to efficiently deliver eLearning courses, the software assists organizations with student registration, competency management, skills-gap analysis, certification, virtual classes and resource allocation (textbooks, instructors, etc.). Corporations use LMS to administer corporate training and compliance programs; resulting in streamlined tasks such as automated record keeping and employee registrations. Educational institutions use Learning Management Systems to enhance and support classroom teaching, and facilitate the distribution of courses to large learner populations across the world.
